Your brand does not have a design problem

Most rebrands fail because the brief was written about the logo. Here is the question to answer first.

Your brand does not have a design problem

Nine times out of ten, when a founder tells us the brand needs a refresh, the design is not what is broken. The positioning is.

The symptom is visual. The cause rarely is.

A logo cannot fix an unclear promise. If your customers cannot say in one sentence what you do better than the alternative, no amount of type refinement will rescue it — you will simply have a more expensive version of the same confusion.

Ask this before you brief a designer

What would a customer lose if we disappeared tomorrow? If the answer is “not much, they would use someone else”, the work ahead is strategy, not design.

Once that answer is sharp, design becomes almost easy. Every choice has a test it must pass.

What this looks like in practice

We spend the first two weeks of most engagements without opening a design file. Interviews, competitor teardowns, and a positioning statement the client argues with until it is true. The identity that follows takes half the time it otherwise would, because there is finally something to design toward.
